Principal's Message

Dear Sakai Families,

It’s hard to believe May starts this week! Spring does bring a lot of activity to Sakai. For your planning, our SBA testing will take place on these dates:

May 6: ELA Part 1
May 7: ELA Part 2
May 13: Math Part 1
May 14: Math Part 2
May 19: Science (5th grade only)

All testing will start in the morning and pause for lunch and recess. Most students will be done by lunch, however, students will be allowed more time after lunch if needed. To ensure students feel comfortable and ready, it’s important that they are on time with a charged Chromebook for testing dates. Student’s showing up after testing has begun may be asked to test in an alternative location so as not to disrupt their classroom. Students will also need reliable headphones or earbuds on testing day. 

Also,  Bike to School Day is on May 15th. We need LOTS of volunteers to make this fun day happen. Please read the information below and consider volunteering. Also, if you haven’t already, it’s time to get your students bike out and ensure it’s in working order. Bike shops on Bainbridge are booking tune ups about a week out right now. Be sure to check helmets too.

Classroom Placement Procedures for Rising 6th Grade Students

Our Placement Process
Student placement is one of the most important processes at Sakai, and we dedicate a great deal of time and care to ensuring each child is placed in an environment where they can thrive. Our goal is to create balanced, supportive learning communities for all students.

To ensure a fair and consistent process across the district, the following steps are used:

  • 5th grade teachers share detailed information about each student with Mr. Crandall, Sakai Principal.
  • The Sakai Placement Team (Principal, Dean of Students, Counselor, and Special Education Teachers) reviews this information thoughtfully.
  • Using this input, the team works collaboratively to determine class placements, with the principal making the final decision.

Most students are well prepared to adjust successfully to a variety of classroom environments, and we are committed to supporting each student during this transition.

Family Input
We value the important perspective that families bring and invite parents/guardians to share information that may help us create the most supportive placement for their child. This may include:

  • Learning needs
  • Social or emotional considerations
  • Classroom environment preferences
  • Health or wellness factors

While we carefully consider all input, we are not able to accommodate requests for specific teachers or placement with particular friends.

How to Submit Information
Parent/guardian input should be submitted in writing using the electronic Google Parent/Guardian Placement Input Form.

  • If you prefer to share information verbally or complete a paper copy, please contact the school counselor: Anita Watson, awatson@bisd303.org, 206-780-6506
  • All input—whether submitted online, verbally, or on paper—must be received by May 15.

These students invited a friend to attend a pizza party with Mr. Crandall. Thank you to That's a Some Pizza and PTO for sponsoring our student incentive program. The nominations are made in reference to Sakai's Four R's: Responsible, Respectful, Reasonable, Reliable.  ​​​​
 

Art News

Seven more weeks and school is out, oh my! Next week will be doing clay as well as testing. So be sure that our students are here or they will miss out. On First Friday, May 1, (this Friday) our School Art Show will be opening at Bainbridge Arts and Crafts Gallery. 4:30 to 6:30. Cookies and juice provided. Please come and enjoy our Art students' work.

June 3rd is our last Knitting and Crocheting Lunch meeting. If your student borrowed a pair of knitting needles or a crochet hook please return before the end of school.

As I am winding down and reflecting on my time as a teacher. I am reminded that Creativity is fostered and can be increased through art.. That a lot of scientists and mathematicians and just really smart people have a hobby in Art. It is part of our humanity and culture and I feel grateful to have been a small part of it.

Student Reminders:
  • Bring a fully charged Chromebook each testing day.

Staff Appreciation Week

We are so excited to celebrate the amazing Sakai staff who show up for our kids every single day! Middle school is a lot — academically, socially, emotionally — and our teachers and staff meet our kids right where they are. They're coaching, mentoring, pushing them to grow, and quietly looking out for the ones having a hard week. 

This year, we're bringing the Farmer's Market to Sakai next week — think fresh, colorful, and full of good things, just like our incredible teachers and staff.

We still need help to make this happen! Every sign-up and donation goes directly toward making our staff feel seen, valued, and appreciated — and trust us, they are so worth it!

Hello Sakai Families! This is your last chance to upload photos of your student for the Sakai Yearbook! The deadline for submission is Friday, May 1! Photos can include things like first day of school photos, sports, hobbies, holidays, school events and vacations! Please use the QR code to upload photos of your student from the 2025-2026 school year!

Bike to School Day

Bike to School Day is on May 15th. This is the date for all schools in our district. Bike to School Day is a really fun day at Sakai and a good opportunity to reinforce safe biking habits and healthy choices. Here is the map of our chaperoned rides. If you can, please consider signing up to volunteer. Aside from biking to and from school, students will also get to ride their bikes at recess on a course outlined on the field (complete with BIPD speedometer). We need lots of help to make it a safe and successful day. Also, if your child would like to participate but doesn’t have a bike, let me know. We have received some bikes in great shape we can loan.

Please remember that all volunteers who help in the classroom, on field trips, and other various activities must be cleared by the district: Volunteering with BISD. The approval process can take up to two weeks. Once approved, you are ready to volunteer and your approval is valid for two years.

Please bring your driver's license or id each time you sign into any school in the district.

Choir to Sing at Mariners Game

The Sakai Choir is singing the National Anthem for the Mariners AGAIN this year!

Tickets are being sold at a discounted rate of $25 plus $5.41 for taxes and fees. Part of the proceeds go to supporting our choir program. We hope to see you at the game on May 18th, Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox! Use the QR code or fevo link below to get access to the discounted tickets. Deadline to purchase is May 15th.

It’s ABC time! Register for the 2026-27 School Year

If you know your student will not attend BISD in the fall, please let us know by contacting the school office, or by sending an email to: studentrecords@bisd303.org with your educational plan so that we may adjust our records accordingly.
 
Our Annual Back to school Check-in process (ABC) is now open and is available by logging in to your Family Access account. Look in the left menu and choose: ABC 26-27 to move through the steps to complete this process ASAP.
It should take about 15 minutes (or less!) to complete the process for each child in your household.

This data collection allows BISD to gather information regarding your students’ plans for the upcoming year. Having an accurate understanding of the number of expected students helps us determine staffing needs, class size and building capacity to better serve our students. In addition to this valuable information, it allows BISD to fulfill its annual notification requirements for public schools in Washington state.

The ABC 26-27 process must be completed for ALL students in the district whether they are brand new to the district or returning.

*NOTE: For students with more than one family, ONLY the Primary Family will have access to complete the ABC’s. Guardians of Non-Primary Families will have “read-only” access. If this is a hardship for your family, please contact the school office for guidance, or send an email to studentrecords@bisd303.org. All families have the ability to make changes to their specific demographic information at any time via Family Access>Student Info>Change Requests link (in the top right corner).
TIPS: 
  • Use a desktop or laptop computer (if trying to use a mobile device, open up a browser and login to Family Access directly. Or, depending on your device you may be able to choose the “Desktop” version of the mobile app for this purpose).
  • Use the “View Full Screen” buttons when available.
  • Each step has a “Complete Step and Move to….” button. You must click that on each step to mark it as complete.
  • Optional steps: PTSO and Bainbridge Schools Foundation steps are there as informational only. Donations are appreciated, but NOT required!
  • If you make a change request that needs to be approved by the district you can still Complete the Step and move on to the next step.  
  • If you think you have completed the process, but it is not showing as complete, look in the right column menu and look for the step(s) that do not have a check mark next to them. Click the link and you’ll either need to sign and date and/or merely click the “complete step” button….then Submit.
  • The LAST step – takes 2 clicks. “Complete ABC 26-27” followed by “Submit ABC 26-27”. As soon as you “Submit” you will get a notice and email that the process has been completed.
  • Forgot or did not receive your Skyward username and/or password? Go to the BISD website>Popular Links>Skyward – use the Forgot Password link. As long as your email address is the same as what we have in our system, this should work. Check your spam if you don’t see the re-set email in your inbox.

Future Focused Summer Academy

Free summer program for students entering 6th grade in fall 2026 - Register now for the Future Focused Summer Academy! Students who are entering sixth grade in fall 2026 can participate in this two-week program to learn self-regulation skills, mindfulness, goal setting, and hope as they explore interests, strengths, and career and college pathways. Coordinated by Kitsap Strong, held at the Olympic College campus in Bremerton.
